- ABOUT THE JEWELS -
i have to make things, and they have to come from my imagination
The pendant is the starting point for every jewel I make. In designing pieces for both the silver-framed-pendant and ann*ifact® collections, I determine what colors, sizes, and shapes of beads I want to attend the pendants, and I make these of glass, earthenware, porcelain, or, extremely rarely, polymer clay. Sometimes I decorate my handcrafted beads with glazes or paints in colors and designs that complement the pendant image.
I occasionally include stones that my husband and I have collected off the ground in various parts of the western U.S.. Rarely, I will incorporate commercially obtained stone or vintage glass beads. Swarovski® crystal and sterling silver Bali-style accents are used in all of the silver-framed pendant pieces. My own handcrafted sterling silver or gold-fill accents (and occasionally, Swarovski® Austrian crystals) embellish the ann*ifacts®. All of our pieces are finished with my handmade metal clasps.
I create each of my jewels with the hope that the viewer will have a personal emotional response to and connection with a piece, even if very different from my own.
All of my work originates in my own head and heart and is made by my own hands, with assistance from Louis, my partner in life and one of my partners in Jackalope Jewels LLC®.
Because our pieces are conceived from a timeless and universal source--the human imagination, the human heart--their appeal transcends momentary trends in fashion. We have no interest in what's "in style", and we wouldn't be caught dead on a bandwagon. If handled with the respect that any hand-wrought work deserves, our jewels will be your family heirloom for generations.
Our creations are one-of-a-kind--I do not reproduce any pieces or designs--my own or anyone else's. I do not do custom orders.
Notes:
My representational figural work is imaginitive/intuitive/surrealist/symbolist in concept and is not intended to portray any actual person/s, living or dead.
Our items are not intended for use by children under the age of 12.
Swarovski® crystals contain lead; that's what gives them their exquisite sparkle. Be warned.
All of the ceramic glazes I use are lead-free and conform to ASTM D 4236.
Many of the china-paints I use contain trace amounts of toxic metals, which are burned out at "higher temperatures". I fire all of my china-painting multiple times to 1422 deg F, which is about the highest temperature the paints can withstand while retaining their color. These firings may or may not be sufficient to burn off the toxicity of the metals. Be warned.
