- ABOUT THE MAKERS -

I am Ann Chavez. I and my husband, Louis Chavez, are the people who make the items offered by Jackalope Jewels®. Louis and I are "self-taught" makers--i.e. we have observed, researched, asked questions, experimented--and spent a lot of time, money, and material through trial-and-error in our quest to discover the best way to make the kind of art we love. I have also benefitted from taking art classes throughout junior high, high school, and college, and from taking lessons from two of the country's foremost porcelain painters. I have been making art of one kind or another for over 30 years.

I imagine the silver-framed-pendant necklaces and the ann*ifacts® and do most of their construction. Louis constructs the .999 fine-silver frames that are used on the silver-framed pendants, and he crafts the wooden picture-shadow boxes that are available for wall-display of the ann*ifacts®.  Louis and I go on rock-collecting expeditions throughout the U.S.-American West, and when we return home, he washes, cuts, shapes, tumbles, polishes, and drills the rocks for use in the jewels. (Louis' help is also invaluable at shows: he does most of the driving; he sets up and takes down the canopy; he trucks the tables, props, and jewels to-and-from the canopy prior to set-up and after take-down; he performs most of the charge-card processing tasks; he feeds me throughout the day; and he "minds the store" when I need a break).

Jackalope Jewels LLC® is my full-time job (2-18 hours a day, 7 days a week), and Louis devotes a large portion of his otherwise spare time to the business, as well.
